NITRITE (NO2) TEST KIT INSTRUCTIONS

Why Do Nitrite Tests?
Nitrite is formed in the aquarium through fish waste, non-eaten food and nitrification by bacteria in the natural cycle of your aquarium as they break down ammonia. Low nitrite levels kill fish by reducing respiration and suppressing the immune system. High nitrite levels can cause fish to suffocate. The AQUANATURE NITRIATE TEST KIT analyses nitrite levels in your tank quickly and accurately by testing parameters from 0-5 ppm.
Testing Tips
This test kit reads total nitrite (NO2 level in parts per million (ppm) which are equivalent to milligrams per liter (mg/L) from 0-5.0 ppm (mg/L).
Directions
Remove safety cap:
1. Fill a clean test vials with 5 ml of water to be tested (to the line on the vials).
2. Shake well NO2 reagent before use. Add 6 drops of Reagent No .1 “SHAKE WELL” and then add 6 drops of Reagent No .2“SHAKE WELL” (holding dropper bottle upside down in a completely vertical position to assure uniformity of drops.)
3. Cap the test vials and shake several times to mix solution.
4. Read the test results after 5 minutes observe the color change of the water sample in the vials horizontally, compare with the NO2 color chart, and read the NO2 value of the corresponding water sample.

Recommended NO2 Levels
Freshwater aquarium (community aquarium): 0-0.2 mg/l
Lake Malawi/Lake Tanganyika aquarium: 0-0.2 mg/l
Plant aquarium with few fish (aquascaping): 0-0.2 mg/l
Marine aquarium: 0-0.2 mg/l
Pond: 0-0.2 mg/l

What the Test Results Indicate

Nitrite levels in newly installed ponds and aquariums will progressively drop to 5 ppm (mg/L) or higher. Nitrate levels will decrease to 0 ppm (mg/L) when the biological filter becomes established. Nitrite levels in established aquariums should never get beyond O, since this might be harmful to fish. The existence of nitrite may be a sign of inadequate biological filtration, overfeeding, or an excessive number of fish.

Decreasing Nitrite Levels in Aquariums

To eliminate nitrite from freshwater aquariums, add AQUANATURE NITRA X to the aquarium filter. Nitrite can also be decreased by partially changing the water, particularly if the starting level was really high. Lowering Nitrite Levels in Ponds

Ensure that there is sufficient surface agitation and oxygenation. When the nitrite level is higher than 0.50 ppm, start doing 25% water changes every two days until the nitrite level is at or below 0.25 ppm. Fish can get severely stressed by even low levels of nitrite, which can result in illness outbreaks and fish mortality.
